Our walk starts in the gardens of the neoclassical building of the Hungarian National Museum (1847), neoclassical building once the most important public building of the city of Pest surrounded by some of the most magnificent 19th century urban palaces from an era also called the. First Golden Age. Let us then zigzag through the old Jewish Quarter (today also the ’Party Quarter’) passing the world famous, oriental style Dohány Street Synagogue (1854/59) with its hidden graveyard. On our way towards elegant Andrássy Avenue (1870s/80s) built out during the early decades of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Entering the oldest streets of Pest passing neo-renassaince Saint Steven’sBasilica (1851-1906), the largest church of the city we will examine some hidden gems including the unique facade of the Hungarian National Treasury, the absolute highlight of Hungarian art nouveau, just to finally arrive to the grandiose House of Parliament (1885-1902), symbolic through both its sheer size and story of its birth.
